West Coast Fever defender Courtney Bruce has continued her rapid rise to the top of the sport, after being named in the Australian Diamonds 2018 Commonwealth Games Squad.
The 24-year-old has been a standout for the Diamonds since making her debut in 2017, and was one of the most consistent performers in the side’s recent Quad Series matches in England and South Africa.
Bruce has been one of the game’s rising defenders in recent years, stamping her authority on Suncorp Super Netball in its inaugural season, a year that was capped off by winning the Club’s Players Player of the Year Award alongside Ingrid Colyer, and the PerthNow People’s Choice Award.
The Gosnells product began her netball journey playing for Zodiacs Netball Club at the Southern Districts Netball Association, before progressing through the ranks, representing Western Australia at 17U, 19U and 21U level.
West Coast Fever Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich said Bruce’s selection was testament to her hard work and dedication.
“Courtney set herself the goal of being selected for the Commonwealth Games and put in an immense amount of work to achieve that, and we are incredibly proud of the successes she has had at both the domestic and international level,” Marinkovich said.
“Courtney is a product of the West Australian netball pathway, and a fantastic role model for the next generation of netballers, and I know she is someone who will represent our Club, State and Nation with great pride.”
“Everyone at West Coast Fever is immensely proud of Courtney and we wish her the best of luck at the Commonwealth Games and look forward to seeing her in action for her country once again.”
Bruce is one of two West Australian’s in the squad, alongside former Fever shooter Caitlin Bassett, who has been named Captain, with both athletes former WAIS scholarship holders.
Australia opens its 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games campaign against Northern Ireland on Thursday 5 April before its remaining pool matches against Barbados (6 April), South Africa (8 April), Fiji (9 April) and Jamaica (11 April).
