Fever itching to hit court for pre season clash

West Coast Fever Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich says her side is itching to hit the court this weekend, with Fever taking on the Firebirds in two pre season clashes.

Saturday’s game will be held at the State Netball Centre in Jolimont, while Sunday’s will see the team travel south to Mandurah.

Marinkovich said the group was excited to turn months of solid training into match experience.

“We’ve got some really strong bench marks that we want to see displayed out on court and really test out our capabilities in the game plan that we’re trying to bring together,” she said.

Marinkovich has an entire squad to choose from following the recent arrival of Jamaican powerhouse Jhaniele Fowler, while Courtney Bruce has returned from Samsung Diamond duties last weekend.

The Firebirds come into the game following two pre-season losses to the Melbourne Vixens, however Marinkovich wasn’t expecting an easy competition from the Queensland side who boast Shooter Romelda Aiken and the returning Laura Geitz.

“Firebirds have been playing finals for a very long-time and are a well-established club, so to be able to have them over here in the west and challenge where we’re at will put us in a good stead.”

“Being able to be vulnerable to see what we can and can’t do, so there’s no fear in our performance and taking to the court the things that we’ve practised.”

Aside from the importance of gaining match day experience, Marinkovich said the weekend’s trip to Mandurah was a fantastic opportunity to reach the Club’s loyal regional fans.

“We want to be a WA community based team and we want people to recognise what the girls are doing in terms of elite sport and leading the way in women’s sport.”

“It’s exciting that we’re able to give back.”

The games in Mandurah are thanks to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the City of Mandurah and the Mandurah and Peel Tourism Organisation.
