Young star Sloan Burton shoots high but parents don’t push it

Sporting genes don’t come much better than Sloan Burton’s.

The 16-year-old is the daughter of former Fremantle and North Melbourne ruckman Matthew Burton and inaugural Perth Oriole Jules Burton (nee Sloan).

Sloan appears set to follow her parents into elite sporting ranks after she was added to the West Coast Fever Academy in recent months.

It came after the 186cm shooter was named MVP in the Perth Lions under 18s grand final win as a 15-year-old.

Sloan averaged more than 23 goals for the season at 85 per cent accuracy and nailed 26 in the decider.

The Year 10 student at John XXIII College says most of her friends at school are much more aware of her 210cm dad’s 147-game AFL career than her 174cm mum’s contribution as a midcourter for the Orioles.

But Sloan reckons it’s fitting that she has both their names represented in her own.

“It’s really cool, really interesting and different,” she said.

“Mum didn’t really tell me much when I was younger about her career or anything.

“I don’t really remember anything of dad’s career, but there’s videos.

“The kids at school probably talk more my dad than my mum. But that’s because he’s nearly seven foot, he kind of sticks out a bit.

“If he ever comes to anything, everyone is always talking about how tall he is.”

Matthew and Jules say they would be delighted if Sloan — one of four daughters — achieves her goal of one day playing for Fever.

But they say there is no pressure from them.

“We’re proud of what she’s achieved so far but we’re proud of whatever level she gets to,” Jules said.

“We are kind of like the opposite. We know how hard it is. If she’s got the desire and the want for it, I’m sure she’ll get there.”

Though Sloan likes watching football, she can’t see herself trying out for a place in the AFLW any time soon.

And Matthew is happy for his eldest daughter to continue to follow her passion for netball.

Sloan has been given a WAIS scholarship and begun using the state-of-the-art facility.

Having started as a basketballer and later taken up netball when her friends were playing, Sloan is most comfortable slotting long bombs in goal attack.

Her idol is long-time New Zealand shooter Maria Tutaia.
