Cox Announced as Fever Skipper
Catherine Cox was today announced as the leader of West Coast Fever for the 2012 season.
Fever Head Coach Norma Plummer has named the 35 year old shooter as Captain of her Perth based team ahead of their departure to the pre-season tournament in New Zealand at the end of the month.
Plummer said Cox would bring a wealth of experience to the role and would be invaluable as a leader for a young and exciting group. “She has a huge amount of knowledge she can pass on to her team mates. She also can recognise situations on court and make the changes needed, rather than me have to wait until the end of a quarter” With a laugh she added that “she can also gauge the mood of the group and lighten things up when needed.”
Cox’s Diamonds team mates and fellow World Champions, Susan Fuhrmann and Caitlin Bassett have been awarded Vice-Captain duties, with Fever veteran Andrea Gilmore named as the fourth member of an experienced Leadership Group.
2012 signals a new era for Fever, with Cox making a well timed return to Perth following her playing days at Perth Orioles 10 years ago.
Cox said she was excited by the opportunity presented to her at this stage of her career and the chance to pass on her experience to the group. However she acknowledged “I am getting pushed every day by the younger girls, so I am learning from them too”
The announcement was made at the State Basketball Centre, under the watchful eye of Perth Wildcats Co-Captains Shawn Redhage and Brad Robbins.
Cox set a new record in the Wildcats halftime celebrity shoot out on Saturday 28th January, so the boys challenged her once again to prove just how good her free throw record stacked up against the pros and her team mates.
